The Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, together with Banpu Public Company Limited, a leading versatile energy company, handed over the “Khlong Sam Wa Low-Carbon Community Project” to members of the Khlong Sam Wa National Resources and Environmental Protection Volunteer (NEV) network at the KC 1 Village Community Learning Center, Khlong Sam Wa District, Bangkok. This project is one of the pilot initiatives arising from a cooperation mechanism among the government, private, and public sectors to support and drive local climate change actions (Thailand Climate Action Conference: TCAC). The Khlong Sam Wa NEV network serves as the primary entity driving and managing the area to create a tangible low-carbon community model in an urban area.
Mr.Komest Putthasorn, Deputy Director General of DCCE, stated, “The KC 1 Village Community Learning Center Project is considered a model for a ‘self-managed community’ that participates in tackling global warming from the household level. The Department plans to expand this project to promote similar collaborations in other areas, building a climate-resilient country through public participation. As a regulatory and partnership-promoting agency, we would like to thank Banpu Public Company Limited and the KC 1 village community for supporting the drive for Thailand’s climate change actions.”
Under the 8-month implementation of the project, Banpu has provided the budget and know-how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by installing a 5-kilowatt solar rooftop system, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2,400 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. This was done alongside establishing household organic waste management demonstration stations using innovative food waste compost bins and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae food waste disposal demonstration kits, which will help reduce organic waste volume and ultimately lead to lower greenhouse gas emissions at landfills, while also promoting its role as a technical mentor in driving local activities.
Mr. Jirameth Achcha, Head of Corporate Services, Banpu Public Company Limited, stated, “Banpu is pleased to have participated in driving this project with DCCE to promote the use of renewable energy. This project aligns with Banpu’s commitment to decarbonization and co-creating a better society. The KC 1 community is strong and united, and we hope everyone can fully utilize both the solar power system and the organic waste disposal stations.”
The Khlong Sam Wa Low-Carbon Community Project can help reduce the electricity cost for the learning center’s common area by an average of over 24,000 baht per year. This leaves a remaining budget to allocate for elderly care welfare, vocational training for housewives groups, Village Health Volunteers (VHV), and residents around the area. Ms. Benjaporn Muang-in, President of the Khlong Sam Wa NEV Network, shared her feelings, stating, “For this project, aside from the electricity and air conditioning used for activities within the center coming from clean energy, household food waste no longer needs to be sent to landfills, which generate greenhouse gases. Instead, it turns into high-quality bio-compost that helps reduce urban farming costs. The community is cleaner, healthier, more united, and everyone feels proud to be a part of helping to mitigate global warming.”
The cooperation among the three sectors in developing the “Khlong Sam Wa Low-Carbon Community” not only empowers the public sector’s drive to fight global warming but also elevates the area of the KC 1 Village Community Learning Center, Khlong Sam Wa District, to become a model site for clean energy management and organic waste management at its source. This is part of supporting Thailand’s master plan toward carbon neutrality and sustainable urban development.
