Banpu and Mahidol University Empower 50 Youth to “Create the World that Thrives” in the 20th Power Green Camp: “The Decarb Mission”

 

Banpu Public Company Limited has delivered an innovative river waste interceptor to Chachoengsao Municipality under the “Banpu Marine Debris Management Project” initiative, aiming to reduce waste from the Bang Pakong River before it reaches Thailand’s coastal waters. Installed at Khlong Ban Mai, Ban Mai 100-Year Market in Chachoengsao Province, the waste interceptor operates without electricity, allows for easy waste removal, and is designed to withstand both freshwater and brackish water conditions. The handover ceremony was presided over by Mr. Khajornkiat Rakpanichmanee, Governor of Chachoengsao Province.

The floating waste interceptor was designed and developed by the Research and Development team of Banpu NEXT Company Limited, a subsidiary of Banpu, to manage waste in rivers and waterways without relying on electricity. The structure is made of stainless steel, providing durability and resistance to corrosion in both freshwater and brackish water conditions. It is equipped with two waste collection containers with a combined capacity of approximately 450 liters, or a load capacity of around 150 kilograms, which can be easily removed and handled by a single operator. The buoyancy system utilizes recycled PU (polyurethane) tanks repurposed into a lightweight yet robust floating structure, while the mooring system employs an adjustable pulley mechanism that accommodates changing water currents and water levels without losing position, allowing the interceptor to operate continuously without obstructing waterway navigation and ensuring ease of long-term maintenance.

 

 

Mr. Jirameth Achcha, Head of Corporate Services, Banpu Public Company Limited, added that over the past two years, Banpu has worked closely with provincial and local government agencies and continuously implemented waste management complementary activities. These include establishing waste banks, promoting knowledge on waste management and marine debris for communities and schools, organizing volunteer riverbank clean-up activities, and installing waste interceptors at key locations. As a result, more than 5,700 kilograms of waste have been prevented from entering the Bang Pakong River, equivalent to a reduction of over 39,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. Banpu will continue to advance the initiative and expand its coverage to target areas along the Bang Pakong River, including sub-districts in Mueang, Ban Pho, and Bang Pakong districts.

 

 

The “Banpu Marine Debris Management Project” is part of the “Cooperation on Marine Debris Management at Estuaries” initiative under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, in collaboration with the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Thai Listed Companies Association, and private sector partners. The project aims to reduce waste at its source before it enters the sea, in support of Thailand’s national marine debris management master plan.
